I shouldn’t be amazed, however I am, by people choosing to join an organization or support an individual for public office which is not in line with their own value system.
For example, the overwhelming majority of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered individuals went to the voting booth in 2008 electing an individual that was not on the same page as their own. President Obama is not for lifting or changing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy which has clearly made our country less safe. President Obama is not in support of same sex marriage. President Obama is not supportive of respecting state’s rights. It’s only been 100 days, more divergence is to come.
Marriage licensing has a long history of discrimination in this country and the Libertarian Party feels we should not be going to the government to ask permission just to marry the one we love. This is a private matter between two people and perhaps their place of worship. GLBT individuals should join the Libertarian Party in their efforts to abolish state-sanctioned marriage if they are seeking true equality.
Support of mis-aligned political candidates is not isolated to GLBT individuals, it permeates through America like a cancer. Republicans continued to support former President Bush even though he deviated greatly from what they believed in. Many people who consider themselves fiscally conservative continued to support Bush even though he was clearly fiscally liberal. Second Amendment advocates continue to support national organizations who are clearly for gun control. I could go on and on however I think you see my point.
Far too long Americans have followed like sheep politicians, political action committees, political parties, and unions that truly do not share their core values. It is only a charade to gain their vote, their dollars, or their name on a petition. I cannot tell you how many times I supported financially and with my sweat, candidates who did the complete opposite of what they promised during their campaign.
Which of the two major political parties is most in line with GLBT values? I would say neither. The only political party that can and does stand proud in their support is the Libertarian Party.
The following is taken directly from the Libertarian Party’s Platform:
1.3 Personal Relationships
Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the rights of individuals by government, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships. Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships.
Neither the Republicans or the Democrats can compete with this ideal. Instead they feed you lip service and frankly are no friend of anyone considering themselves for individual and equal rights.
If you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered than may I suggest you find a political party that is most in line with your values. I think you will find a home within the Libertarian Party.
